May 2024 Monthly traffic Update Key points: o In May 2024, there were a total of 733,000 international passenger movements in the month, a 9% increase compared to the same month in 2023. With international seat capacity marginally up to 950,000 for the month, international load factors rose to 77%, an increase of 6.5 percentage points; o Load factors were strongest on Pacific Island routes reaching 82% in the month of May, closely followed by Australia with 80%. Load factors on long-haul international routes were at an average of 73% with departing load factors peaking at 80% as northern hemisphere visitors departed from New Zealand during May; o 52% of all international passenger movements in the month were undertaken by New Zealand Nationals, a 10% increase on the same month in 2023. Conversely, all other nationalities collectively experienced an 8% increase in passenger movements compared to May 2023; o Domestic passenger movements had a modest 1% uptick compared to May 2023, despite a marginal increase of 2% in seat capacity with load factors experiencing a slight decline to 82%. Passengers on domestic jet routes increased by 2% in-line with a 2% increase in seat capacity compared to May 2023, whilst passengers on regional routes remained steady year-on-year despite a marginal 1% increase in seat capacity; o Total passenger movements in the month of May were 1.4 million, down 8.9% on the 1.5 million seen in April 2024; and o Queenstown Airport international passenger numbers in May 2024 increased 17% on the year prior and domestic passengers increased 3% on the same month last year.
