August 2024 Monthly traffic update

15/09/2024, 20:30 Coordinated Universal Time, GENERAL

Key points: • In August 2024, there was a total of 774k international passenger movements in the month, a 3% increase compared to the same month in 2023; • International seat capacity declined by 31k (3%) to 968k seats for the month with international load factors rising to 80%, an increase of 4.4 percentage points on August 2023. Seat capacity on the Tasman routes decreased by 58k (due to AirAsia X exit and Qatar Airways switching to non-stop Doha services). Seat capacity on the United States routes declined by 17k (15%) on August 2023 due to Hawaiian Airlines not operating during the Northern Summer season and Air New Zealand suspending Chicago services. Capacity on the Asia and Middle-East routes increased by 42k on August 2023 off-setting some of the declines seen elsewhere, with additional seat capacity added on China, Indonesia and Qatar routes; • Domestic passenger movements decreased by 31k or 4% in the month of August 2024 when compared the prior year with a 53k or 6% decline in seat capacity the main driver for the reduction. The majority of this reduction in capacity arose from one domestic airline which has several narrow-body jet aircraft grounded for accelerated maintenance. Partly offsetting the reduction in domestic capacity, load factors in the month rose to 84%, an increase of 1.5 percentage points over August 2023; • Total passenger movements for the month of August 2024 of 1,441k were 87% of the pre-COVID equivalent with domestic passenger movements at 86% and international passenger movements at 87% respectively. For the 12 months ending August 2024 total passenger movements were 18.6 million, 90% of the pre-COVID equivalent; and • Queenstown Airport international passenger numbers in August 2024 increased 15% on the year prior and domestic passengers increased 7% on the same month last year.
